This is the most common type of class offered at South Coast Dancesport, and the basis for nearly 95% of our students’ instruction. Private lessons are offered at all times of the day, from noon till 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturdays, by appointment. Within their private lessons, students have the opportunity to focus on one dance or several, to prepare a single dance for an event or develop a broad range of skills to serve them in any social setting. Teachers and students have access to any music they would like and have ample floor space within which to learn progressive, traveling dances like the Foxtrot or Waltz or focus on the more sensual, club-style dances like the Salsa, Cha-Cha or Swing. At South Coast Dancesport, learning within the private lesson format is considered the ‘speed teaching’ method of instruction because of the rapid improvement students make from lesson to lesson.
Group classes at South Coast Dancesport are the perfect complement to your private lessons. These classes vary in content from day to day depending both on the composition of the class and the dance being taught. Instructors rotate, so you will have the opportunity to experience the exceptional teaching skills of each of our professionals. Each dance is taken from the very beginning as students are given a brief history of the dance as well as the type of music most commonly played. The 7:00 p.m. group classes are taught daily and are designed for ALL levels, while the 7:45 p.m. classes are taught at the intermediate level. Whatever your level may be, our group classes will truly lay a foundation you will remember. Basic technique and social steps are the order of the day; singles and couples are welcome.
South Coast Dancesport has become one of the West Coast's most popular destinations for the top professionals in the world of ballroom and Latin dancing to both practice and teach. Boasting the largest main ballroom (over 3000 square feet!) in southern California, the studio practically hums with great dance energy. As such, former and current champions are regularly welcomed to teach other professionals and students alike. We call these top pros "Coaches." These coaches are brought in as another set of eyes on private lessons to assist a student's main teacher. Including someone with the years of experience our coaches possess speeds the learning process dramatically for students. The student's main teacher informs the coach of the student's goals and current progress and lets the coach know what, specifically, they'd like he or she to work on. The main teacher remains on the lesson with the student, taking notes and filming valuable new techniques to review later with the student. Coaches you will see on the floor at South Coast Dancesport include Heather Smith, Ron Montez, Rufus Dustin, Tony Meredith, Ray Rivers, Marianne Nicole, Glenn Weiss, Bill Sparks, Kasia Kozac, Susan Puttock, Jonathan Roberts, Wendy Johnson and many more. Please return to this page regularly to see upcoming coaches.
Our periodic Coach's Seminars are some of the most popular events at South Coast Dancesport. Featuring a visiting coach, these 45-minute Group Classes are designed with all skill levels in mind. At a minimal cost, these classes can cover everything from basic concepts of movement and musicality to partnership and styling. You'll never regret spending the evening with our guest teachers. Featuring US champions, world finalists and outstanding trainers, our Coach's Seminars are an exciting and educational aspect of the dance life within our studio. Previous coaches have included Kasia Kozak, Jonathan Roberts, Tony Meredith, Glenn Weiss, Charlotte Jorgensen and Ray Rivers.
